Art has always been a part of my life. I was fortunate
that my mother saved many of my early drawings. My
husband and I own Zum Gali Gali Rubber Stamps. I
draw and design stamps for the company and turned
a drawing I made when I was four into a stamp
design.
I discovered the monotype about 30 years ago and found
it to be a perfect vehicle for my art making. I love
the way it combines drawing, painting and collage with
a vast variety of printmaking materials and techniques.
I never lose the sense of wonder that occurs when I
pull a print off my plate.
My work tends to be about layers. The majority of my
prints take many trips through the press so there is an
actual building up of layers. I have learned that life
is full of layers and that complexity informs my work.
I take advantage of different viscosities of inks to
create some of these overlaps. In recent years, I have
switched from traditional oil based inks and paints to
those that are water soluble. Currently I am using Akua
inks.
I recently retired from teaching elementary art in
Newton, Massachusetts. I currently teach a variety of
classes at the Jewish Community Center in Newton and
use the printmaking facilities there. I love the
opportunity to bring children into a studio that has a
printing press. I have learned as much from my students
as from the excellent teachers I had in college,
graduate school and beyond.
